Best Build for Thoma in Genshin Impact

Pros & Cons
- Dedicated Shield-support
- Excellent Shield uptime
- Other Pyro units have shield mechanics but don't exactly substitute Thoma
- Unique ability to "stack" up his shield value.
- Has the off-field pyro application niche
- Expensive to build
- Really wants constellations to ease the building process
- Very low base stats make investments less efficient
- High Burst Energy cost requires a lot of ER investment
- As a shielder, does not do well to absorbing/mitigating damage
- Lacks relevant damage profile
- You need to value the protection that Thoma provides more than the damage from another support
- Thoma's Pyro application isn't that practical/valuable
- Needing story-locked materials for growth hurts newer accounts
Skills

Normal Attack
Performs up to four consecutive spear strikes.
Charged Attack
Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to lunge forward, dealing damage to opponents along the way.
Plunging Attack
Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE DMG upon impact.

Thoma vaults forward with his polearm and delivers a flame-filled flying kick that deals AoE Pyro DMG, while also summoning a defensive Blazing Barrier.
At the moment of casting, Thoma's Elemental Skill applies Pyro to himself.
The DMG Absorption of the Blazing Barrier scales off Thoma's Max HP.
The Blazing Barrier has the following traits:
- Absorbs Pyro DMG 250% more effectively.
- When a new Blazing Barrier is obtained, the remaining DMG Absorption of an existing Blazing Barrier will stack and its duration will be refreshed.
The maximum DMG Absoprtion of the Blazing Barrier will not exceed a certain percentage of Thoma's Max HP.

Thoma spins his polearm, slicing at his foes with roaring flames that deal AoE Pyro DMG and weave themselves into a Scorching Ooyoroi.
Scorching Ooyoroi
While Scorching Ooyoroi is in effect, the active character's Normal Attacks will trigger Fiery Collapse, dealing AoE Pyro DMG and summoning a Blazing Barrier.
Fiery Collapse can be triggered once every 1s.
Except for the amount of DMG they can absorb, the Blazing Barriers created in this way are identical to those created by Thoma's Elemental Skill, Blazing Blessing:
- Absorbs Pyro DMG 250% more effectively.
- When a new Blazing Barrier is obtained, the remaining DMG Absorption of an existing Blazing Barrier will stack and its duration will be refreshed.
The maximum DMG Absorption of the Blazing Barrier will not exceed a certain percentage of Thoma's Max HP.
If Thoma falls, the effects of Scorching Ooyoroi will be cleared.
Passives

When you fish successfully in Inazuma, Thoma's help grants a 20% chance of scoring a double catch.

When your current active character obtains or refreshes a Blazing Barrier, this character's Shield Strength will increase by 5% for 6s.
This effect can be triggered once every 0.3 seconds. Max 5 stacks.

DMG dealt by Crimson Ooyoroi's Fiery Collapse is increased by 2.2% of Thoma's Max HP.
Constellations

When a character protected by Thoma's own Blazing Barrier (Thoma excluded) is attacked, Thoma's own Blazing Blessing CD is decreased by 3s, while his own Crimson Ooyoroi's CD is decreased by 3s.
This effect can be triggered once every 20s.

Crimson Ooyoroi's duration is increased by 3s.

Increases the Level of Blazing Blessing by 3.
Maximum upgrade level is 15.

After using Crimson Ooyoroi, 15 Energy will be restored to Thoma.

Increases the Level of Crimson Ooyoroi by 3.
Maximum upgrade level is 15.

When a Blazing Barrier is obtained or refreshed, the DMG dealt by all party members' Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attacks is increased by 15% for 6s.

Builds
Shield Support Build
Thoma's low base stats and talent values really don't help him versus other competitive options, so its better to build towards the niches that he uniquely occupies. Thoma's unique ability to stack shields should be valuable but due to his low stats and scalings often times you'll be refreshing a very small shield rather than build a very big shield.
Skill > Burst
The maximum shield amount scales with his skill build while his Skill also provides the strongest shield in his kit. His burst can be invested in but note that its damage is irrelevant thus you mainly raise the Burst to help raise your shield stacking's consistency.
Main stats: ER or HP/HP/HP or Crit Rate
Substats: ER/HP/Crit rate
Crit rate is relevant on Thoma for reliably activating Favonius Lance's passive. ER and HP are the most valuable stats. Sands is more dependent on your party composition. Generally speaking guaranteeing Burst consistency matters more than your shield strength.

Favonius Lance is Thoma's best weapon with good stats and an amazing passive
High ER substat is valuable on Thoma
Not exactly a great weapon for Thoma as its passive isn't that useful
HP is valuable on Thoma but the ER polearms offer more value

Artifact sets with utility are more valuable on Thoma as he does not benefit as much from the raw stats over other characters

Burgeon DPS Build
Thoma's constant Pyro application makes him a great enabler and DPS for a burgeon team. He needs investment in his level and as much EM as possible, as he will be the one in charge of triggering Burgeon.
No talents are needed for a Burgeon Thoma, as transformative reactions only consider the character's level and EM.
Main stats: EM or ER%/EM/EM
Sub stats: EM = ER%
Only Elemental Mastery and Energy Recharge are needed for consistent uptime.

Any EM weapon works perfectly on Thoma, especially if refined.

4CW offers a Burning DMG increase, which is what Burgeon Thoma seeks.
